Proper automotive care extends beyond oil changes and
tire rotations. For example, if your vehicle happens to break down near
East Stroudsburg or Bethlehem, it's important to know how to jump-start
a car battery. This process is relatively easy, and will be useful
during your travels near Stroudsburg, Jim Thorpe, and Easton.
The following article will teach you how to jump-start your battery, while also discussing signs your battery may be wearing out. If you ultimately need a new battery, the Ray Price Honda service center is the place to go.
Jump-Starting Your Car Battery
There are a few simple steps that you must follow to get your car battery, or someone else's battery, going after it shuts off.
To begin, you'll want to make sure that both cars are turned off. Next, you'll need jumper cables. These cables should come with red and black tips. The red tips are positively charged, and the black are negatively charged.
Once you have the jumper cable in hand and the cars are turned off, you attach one of the red (positive) clips to the positive terminal on the stalled battery. Next, you attach the other red (positive) clip to the positive terminal of the working battery.
After that, it's time for the black clips. One black (negative) clip attaches to the negative terminal of the good battery, and the other should be attached to a clean, unpainted metal surface on the disabled car's hood.
Once you've done this, start the working car, then the disabled car, and leave it running for three minutes or so. Then, you can remove the cables in the reverse order of when you attached them.
Another good note-be sure to leave the recently jumped car running for at least thirty minutes, so the battery can charge.
Signs Your Car Battery Is Dying
A good way to prevent battery collapses is to be proactive and change your battery once it shows signs of wear.
Below are a few notable symptoms of decaying batteries:
- You've had to jump it already-Â If you find yourself jumping your car battery often, it needs to be replaced.
- Your engine takes multiple attempts to start-Â If your vehicle shows sluggish starting ability as you turn the key, it could be your car battery failing.
- Obvious corrosion-Â If you look at your battery and find it to be covered in acidic gunk, it means you should make a swap.
