  • If you opt for the standard 6-speed automatic transmission, you'll have the benefit of smooth shifting and optimized performance, and an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 18-19 MPG city and 26-27 MPG highway.1
  • For a slightly more fuel-efficient drive in the city, upgrade to the 9-speed automatic transmission, with closely-spaced gear ratios that get you an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 19-20 MPG city and 26-27 MPG highway.1

Honda Pilot MPG: Drivetrain

2018 Honda Pilot SpecsThe Honda Pilot also makes two drivetrains available, which changes your miles per gallon capabilities depending on which one you choose.

  • If you want the most efficient drive, standard front-wheel drive (FWD) is a good choice, achieving an EPA-estimated 19-20 MPG city and 27 MPG highway.1
  • If you're worried about how a FWD car will manage in the kind of snow we get around here, you can take advantage of the available Intelligent Traction Management system, which comes with a "Snow" mode for FWD cars.

In all-wheel drive (AWD), however, this system also includes "Normal," "Mud," and "Sand" in addition to "Snow" mode for optimal traction, whatever your terrain. This Intelligent Variable Torque Management™ AWD system also actively monitors your driving conditions and automatically adjusts torque to meet your traction needs.

If you're operating in "Normal" mode, this system will save fuel by backing off during highway cruising to allow you to operate in a kind of FWD mode. Overall, this drivetrain will help you achieve and EPA-estimated fuel economy of 18-19 MPG city and 26 MPG highway.1

Honda Pilot Engine Specs

2018 Honda Pilot PerformanceWhen looking at the Honda Pilot MPG estimates, it's important to consider the engine.

  • The Pilot is equipped with a 3.5L i-VTEC® V6 that generates 280 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque.
  • It's able to generate so much power while keeping its fuel economy high by utilizing Variable Cylinder Management™ cylinder deactivation.
  • This automatically takes your Pilot from six cylinders down to four during smooth driving conditions, like highway cruising, so that you're not expending unnecessary energy.
  • This engine is also equipped with Idle Stop to help prevent wasted fuel while stopped at a red light or in traffic.
  • It works by turning off the engine when it's not in use and seamlessly powering it back up when you hit the accelerator.
