Every year, drivers in Northampton County must get a state inspection of their vehicles to ensure that they're operating safely. While a variety of tests are performed to assess your vehicle's condition, one of the most important is the PA emissions test. This test allows the inspector to determine if the vehicle meets pollution control standards and is safe to be operated on the roads.

What is an Emissions Test?

When your vehicle burns gas to operate, the engine emits gasses and pollutants into the atmosphere. They vary from state to state, but your vehicle needs to meet certain standards when it comes to these harmful emissions, which is why emissions tests are conducted.

Emissions testing determines how much pollution is coming from your vehicle while it's operating. During the testing, technicians can identify any irregularities or weaknesses with your emissions control system so they can be repaired, reducing the amount of emissions and pollutants coming from your vehicle.

How an Emissions Test is Performed

  1. During an emissions test, the technician will hook up the vehicle to a variety of diagnostic equipment, including a chassis dynamometer, which measures the vehicle's power and torque, and an oxygen sensor, which measures the amount of pollution the vehicle releases.
  2. While the vehicle is locked in place, it will be put through several speed cycles so the technician can measure the emissions put out during the different performance peaks.
  3. While your vehicle is being checked at different RPMs and speeds, the amount of pollution that it emits will vary.
  4. The oxygen sensor will take these measurements and report them to the technician.
  5. The technician will then determine whether your vehicle passes the emissions test based on the state and EPA standards.
  6. If it doesn't pass the test, you can't register or drive your vehicle.
  7. Subsequently, you'll need to get repairs on your vehicle and have the tests performed again to ensure that the emissions meet the regulations before you can actually drive the vehicle again.
